There are actually a few ways you can successfully install Windows on an external drive. Installing Windows on an external drive would be a great solution to the problem of available space, but as we said, Boot Camp and Windows impose a restriction on installing to an external drive. While Boot Camp Assistant can partition your startup drive for you to make room for Windows, there are bound to be many of you who just don’t have room to spare on your startup drive to install Windows. One of the downsides to Boot Camp and the Windows installer is that it restricts you to only installing Windows on your Mac’s internal drive. It’s a nice capability that lets you select – at boot time – which operating system you wish to use: macOS or Windows.

You could do what you have already done, and try using the BDCEDIT commands to make sure windows 7 knows where it is now.Boot Camp and Boot Camp Assistant allow you to install Windows on your Mac. c: is the drive letter of your 500 GB drive. After it is successfully applied, use these commands in the PE window: x:\windows\system32\bcdedit /set device partition=c: x: is ususally the RAM drive created when you booted to your WAIK cd. Do a quick format of the 500 GB drive then use imagex /apply :\my_win7_image.wim 1 7. Then after the image is captured from the small drive, you can apply the image to the larger drive. use the command imagex /capture :\my_win7_image.wim "My Windows 7 image" 6. Note the external source you are going to use as the destination to store your image. For example normally an OS is on C:, but with more than one drive it might show as D:, E: etc. You can make a WAIK bootable CD by downloading WAIK and use your Windows 7 DVD as a source to make the bootable CD. Use imagex to image your windows 7 drive. What you could do is split your 80 gig in half and install both of your operating systems on and install all your programs to your logical 500gd drive. This means that if you ever get a virus of you c drive messes up you can restore it back within 10 minutes (maximum), you backups are small and you disk manangement is second to none. The next handy trick is to install all programmes from all operting systems onto your logical D drive and that means that you C drives will remain small and easy to backup and restore and you will only be using little space for all you programs because all 3 operating systems are running these programs from the same location.

The work around to this is to just from xp do a backup of your win 7 hidden partiton and restore a backup of vista in hidden form over the top of it and then use the pqboot for windows tool in portable norton partition magic to boot into vista. It does Not work for switching between vista and win7 unfortunately. So you can boot between win7 and xp OR vista and XP. Unfortunately this will only work with XP as your other operating system. Download norton partition magic portable and use the pq boot for windows feature to jump between operating systems. I have 2x 30gb primary partitions (one always hidden)and the rest of your drive can be a logical partiton(here you can store all your programs, documents, games and backups) I installed win7 into my other primary partition after setting it actice and unhiding it. Using disk director 10 partition, your 500gb drive. install winXp, install arcronis disk director suite 10 and arcronis drive image. I have a good setup that works and you can do it all using your 500gb drive. I would like to avoid completely reinstalling Win7 on the new drive, if possible, so would appreciate any suggestions. All went well, but Win 7 will not boot from that drive, giving me a device unavailable error, so I had to go back to using the smaller drive. Using Acronis True Image, I cloned the Win7 drive to a 500gb drive. I liked Win 7 so much that I decided to use it more and wanted to clone the drive to a larger one. I have Win7 RC1 installed on a second drive in a dual boot configuration(with XP on first drive), and it is working great.
